Day 1 of Three-day Sale
Lot 507:
A King George V Police Coronation Medal 1911 with Royal Irish Constabulary
reverse. Un-named as issued.
No formal roll appears to exist for the distribution of the medal to the RIC but, in line
with the awards to the other provincial police forces, the medal was issued to
approximately one in every twenty members of the RIC, based primarily on long
service and an exemplary service record. Confirmation of the total number of awards
is given in the records of the Royal Mint which show that 572 medals were struck
(total strength of RIC was 10, 607), making it a relatively scarce award, and that 144
yards of ribbon were ordered from Messrs Redmayne, the order being fulfilled on 1
June 1912. The RIC medals were issued unnamed although some were later
privately engraved by the recipients.
Good Very Fine (GVF) condition.
