Day 1 of Three-day General Sale
Lot 364:
A Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medal (VR issue) named to Private J M Morris The GGFG (The Governor General’s Foot Guards).
The Colonial Auxiliary Forces Long Service Medal was instituted on 18 May 1899 and was awarded to all ranks serving in the volunteer or militia forces in British colonies, protectorates and the dominions for 20 years of service. Service during wartime counted double. It was authorised for Canada in 1902 and 6,400 were awarded to Canadians before it was superseded by the Efficiency Medal (Canada) in 1931.
The Governor General’s Foot Guards is the senior reserve infantry regiment in the Canadian Army and was formed on June 7th, 1872 in Ottawa. The Regiment still remains today as a Primary Reserve infantry unit, and the members are part-time soldiers. The uniforms, customs and traditions of the GGFG are modelled on those of the Guards Regiments of the British Household Division.
With a historical note on the GGFG.
Some light marks on the obverse, but generally Very Fine (VF) condition
