DAY 1 of Three-Day General Auction
Lot 333:
A Scinde Campaign Medal 1843 with ‘Meeanee Hyderabad 1843’ reverse, named to: Shaik Goolab Naique 25 th Regt N. I. ‘Naique’ is an alternative form to Naik, equivalent to Corporal in the army of the Bombay Presidency of the East India Company. On the conclusion of his brilliant campaign for the conquest of Scinde, General Sir Charles Napier was alleged to have despatched to his superiors the single word report: “peccavi” (the Latin for & I have sinned, "which was a pun on “I have Scinde”).
This pun appeared under the title ‘Foreign Affairs’ in Punch, magazine on 18 May
1844. The true author of the pun was, however, the Englishwoman Catherine Winkworth, who submitted it to Punch, which then printed it as a factual report.
This medal is fitted with the 40mm German Silver replacement suspender which is common to the medals to the 25th Bombay native Infantry. A few small marks but
generally Good Very Fine (GVF) condition.
